No new malaria cases
published: Thursday | August 9, 2007

The Ministry of Health yesterday reported that there have been no newly confirmed cases of malaria in the island within the last five weeks.

Dr. Eva Lewis-Fuller, acting head of the Malaria Prevention and Control Programme, said the absence of cases over this period is an indication of the hard work that the Ministry of Health has put in.

Citing the vulnerability of Jamaica, Dr. Lewis-Fuller stated that despite the positive trend, the ministry will continue its active fever surveillance and intense vector control activities to ensure that no more cases of malaria occur.

"We will continue spraying insecticides in the affected areas to keep the density on the anopheles mosquito at a level that will not support transmission of malaria," she said.
