I am a youth in the age group of 25-35 and I was informed that my ability to vote in this critical election was denied by the policy position of the Electoral Committee of Jamaica. I was informed by the Electoral Office that, irrespective of the fact that I have a valid voters ID, I was removed from the voters list based on my change of address.I am saddened by this, based on the fact that I am currently using my Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) number as my drivers license number, I am employed within the government sector, I am an active tax payer and not able to exercise my vote.
Mr. Danville Walker indicated in a televised advertisement that he wants to treat every voter with respect. Mr. Walker, there is still a golden opportunity to fulfill this mandate by printing a supplemental voters list to ensure all eligible voters can exercise their right to vote. Technology can also facilitate the referencing of data available in government departments such as motor vehicle, TRN and property tax data to verify addresses.
This leads me also to question the ability of the Electoral Office to carry out verification of addresses, and I am saying there is time to reconsider this infringement of the rights of the Jamaican voters.
