Parties have lost touch with youth
published: Saturday | August 11, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Having watched with interest the political campaigns from both parties, I have been left without a doubt in my mind that both sides have lost touch with the youth. I am thoroughly convinced that the system still views young people as mindless ignoramuses who need to be told what to do at every turn.

As a young Jamaican, I firmly believe that we no longer need people talking down to us from a platform. What we need is a conversation, a two-way conversation. It is only through this kind of a dialogue that true change can come about. In this age of information, the Internet and mobile phones, politicians have no excuse for being out of touch with the youth. Alas, however, there is hope.

I recently came upon a website, www.watchmi.com, where both parties have all their television advertisements, and it is, I believe, an invaluable resource for politicians to communicate with young people on a regular basis. So I must congratulate the developers of the site and encourage politicians to make use of the service.

I am, etc.,

KATHERINE PARSONS
