A woman of grace - Renae Ellis
published: Wednesday | August 15, 2007

Renae Ellis, Miss Jergens.

Name: Renae Ellis

Age: 19

Height: 5'11"

Vital statistics: 32-24-35

Occupation: Entertainment Co-ordinator

Sponsor: Jergens

Why did you decide to enter the competition?

"Well, I decided to enter because for many years I have been watching these beauty competitions and I wanted the opportunity to prove that you don't have to have the lighter complexion to be a successful beauty queen."

What is your definition of a beauty queen?

"My definition of a beauty queen is a person who has poise and grace, and the ability to lead. So, she has to be physically beautiful and portray inner beauty."

What do you expect to achieve by entering the competition?

"Well, apart from getting a leaner body, I am getting the ability to socialise with some of the most beautiful women in Jamaica. Apart from that, I hope to be a more well-rounded person. I am loving this experience so much and I have so much to learn and so much to achieve than being beautiful."

What is your best asset?

"I would say that I am a very flexible person so I don't focus on any one talent; I try to learn a little of everything."

How would you sell Jamaica to a foreigner in light of the high crime rate?

"I must say Jamaica has so much to offer and Jamaica is not the only violent country in the world. We have some of the most beautiful beaches, fantastic, down-to-earth people. So, in light of the crime rate ... I would sell the beaches, hotels and our people even more and I am sure they will be sending friends and family here."

What do you love the most about Jamaica?

"Jamaica is such a small country and it stands out. We excel in track and the people as I said, the food and culture. We are small but we are a very talented set of people."

If you could meet one person, who would it be, and why?

"I would want to meet our Prime Minister. I admire her a lot. She set her goal to be the Prime Minister and she spent years working to meet that goal, especially in a male-dominated area, but that did not stop her from accomplishing her dream."

If you win, what sector of the society would you work with?

"I would definitely want to work with inner city youth in terms of education and giving them a fair chance of getting a proper education. I would also try my best to provide evening classes for them, so if they sat an exam and failed, it would be free of charge for them to try and resit these subjects."

If you were the Prime Minister, what changes would you make, and how?

"I wouldn't change dancehall music because it has given us additional exposure, but I would encourage the dancehall icons to portray positive messages to the youths listening to them, especially because most of them want to be like them. If they try this I am sure in few years there will be a reduction in the crime rate."

What do you hope to achieve in five years?

"I want so bad to be a supermodel, but that would take so much luck. But, I would like to be in college studying to be a cardiologist."
