After sevens, the eights
published: Wednesday | August 15, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

On the recent announcement of the dates for nomination and election days, much was made of the Prime Minister's seemingly deliberate effort to associate a series of sevens with the process.

One need only observe the antics of many of our citizens on any given day, near a lottery counter or an off-track betting window. Numbers and dreams are standard fare at these locations and every number 'means' something.

So, to say the obsession with numbers is either new or unusual is perhaps the position of the less observant among us.

Regardless of which party forms the government, on the morning of the 28th day of the eighth month, Jamaica will have awoken to its eighth prime minister. How's that for numerology?

I am, etc.,

DAN HAMILTON

Toronto, Ontario
