published: Saturday | August 18, 2007

Defending champions Windalco whipped hosts St. Ann Bauxite 4-1 on Thursday night in a rescheduled match of the Inter-Bauxite men's table tennis competition, at Port Rhodes Sports Club (formerly Kaiser Sports Club).

The win takes Windalco to joint first place in the standings with St. Ann Bauxite on seven points, three ahead of Alpart, which have four points. However, Alpart have two matches left to play while Windalco and St. Ann Bauxite each have one match remaining.

The top team at the end of the league fixtures qualifies for the final, while the second- and third-place teams will play-off on the day of the final, with the winner advancing to the final.

In individual results, St. Ann Bauxite won the first match as Andrew Lawrence outlasted former singles champion George Hyman 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-7 (3-2). This turned out to be St. Ann Bauxite's lone consolation victory as Windalco won all four remaining matches.

Another former singles champion, Mark Gregory, edged Oral Brown 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 11-6 (3-2), Wayne Aird outplayed Courtney Dunkley 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7 (3-1) and Marlon Ranger tagged Rayon Grizzle 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5 (3-1) in singles matches.

In doubles, Hyman & Aird stopped Brown & Dunkley 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6 (3-1) to complete Windalco's four triumphs.

The final will be hosted by Windalco on Saturday, September 8 at the Ingleside Wellness & Recreation Centre in Mandeville.

In addition to the men's team play-offs, the women's team final, men's and women's singles, plus events for employees' children in different age groups, will be held on this date.
