Most of Jamaica to receive electricity by September 9, says JPS
published: Saturday | August 25, 2007

As of yesterday afternoon, the Jamaica Public Service Company Ltd. (JPS) said it had restored power to about 225,000 (40 per cent) of its approximately 560,000 customers.

The JPS said that, by Sunday, power would be restored to most areas in Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. James, Westmoreland, Hanover, Trelawny and St. Ann.

By Friday, August 31, power supply should be restored to most customers in St. Thomas, Portland and St. Mary.

Other areas to be restored

However, the company said based on the extent of the damage to its systems in the southern parishes, it is projecting that, by Sunday, September 9, most areas will be restored in Clarendon, Manchester and St. Elizabeth.

According to the JPS, "It is very possible that there could be a few customers who may be without supply even after most of their parish is energised."

It said this could be due to a lack of access to some communities, or to extensive damage on sections of the power delivery system.

Meanwhile, theNational Water Commission (NWC) said yesterday that approximately 75 per cent of its production facilities are now up and running.
