LETTER OF THE DAY - Is it full speed ahead or no speed?
THE EDITOR, Sir: On July 8, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller announced the long-awaited date for general election as Monday, August 27. This was the last date that I would have expected the Prime Minister to announce.
Stop garrison politics now
The Editor, Sir: As an 18-year-old student, I consider myself as being very young, in terms of my experiences in Jamaican politics. Recently, however, I was finally able to read the dramatic novel, Born Fi Dead, by Lauren Gunst, who studied Jamaican posses and their link to politics back in the 1970s and 1980s.
Help offer to Jamaica Public Service
The Editor, Sir: Some 10 years ago, I retired from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) after serving for 15 years as general manager, public relations. During my tenure, one of the disasters which we experienced was Hurricane Gilbert, which devastated the electricity system islandwide, causing a total shutdown.
Put off the election!
The Editor, Sir: We need to allow the country to normalise up to the point where the majority of our citizens' state of mind can conform to the reality of the effect of Hurricane Dean and the restoration process that is required to stabilise the country. The conditions as exist are not conducive to hosting a general election in modern Jamaica.
