




On Sunday, the northern eyewall of Hurricane Dean swept the south and east coasts of Jamaica, demolishing communities from St. Mary to St. Elizabeth. This Category Four hurricane devastated homes, schools, public buildings and the agricultural sector. The Gleaner's photographers travelled the island to document and highlight the devastation wrought by the first hurricane of the Atlantic season.

(2) Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer: This resident of Long Bay in Portland uses a ladder to get inside his house which was extensively damaged during the passage of Hurricane Dean, on Tuesday. (3) Peta-Gaye Clachar/Staff Photographer: Youngsters from Pondside in Bull Bay, St. Andrew, make use of the waters that flooded the path used by residents to access their homes this week. These boys found a boat and decided to have some fun while charging passers-by $50 each for rides to their homes and $100 to tour the community. (4) Ian Allen/Staff Photographer: These Old Harbour Bay residents have taken to the sea to wash their clothes on Tuesday, after the passage of Hurricane Dean.
