Let's start the change!
published: Sunday | August 26, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Over the past months, we have all grown weary of constant political campaigning in every sphere of our lives. The bombardment is perpetual, as both political parties give their very last to jab at their opponents. With all their hearts, they seek power. My desire is that whoever wins their seats in the Parliament will wholeheartedly serve the country with the same passion and intensity as they sought power. Or is it that their desire to serve will be satisfied only by the quest for power and nothing will be left to do the job when the power is won?

Change beyond political government

It is my view that the change that Jamaica needs now goes beyond a change in political government from orange to green, or Portia to Bruce. Rather, what Jamaica needs more urgently is a change in the heart and focus of each citizen. The truth is that the politicians have played a huge role in the deterioration of Jamaica - morally, economically and socially. And they must lead the way to fix it.

However, we haveall contributed to the wrong path that Jamaica is on, and we must, therefore, individually take responsibility to build Jamaica back. We have erred in terms of supporting back-door deals, seeing people committing crimes or telling lies and not correcting these lies, in addition to promoting music that constantly exalts violence. yet, we cry when our young men start doing the same thing that we have been praising in our music.

Let us return to the the values that guarantee long-term success, values such as truth, honesty, integrity, unselfishness, (doing unto your neighbour what you would want your neighbour to do to you), and love. If you and I decide to be faithful, honest and unselfish in our relationship and interactions with our neighbours, we will have a much better Jamaica.

Let the change begin with me and you! Let's ensure that whatever seed we plant today will produce the fruit we reap tomorrow.

I am, etc.,
