'Let's build a monument of thanksgiving'
published: Sunday | August 26, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The nation has again been spared the devastation of another hurricane. This time 'Dean', packing gale-force winds of 145 mph, and like 'Ivan', was on course, with dead aim at Jamaica. But again, the direct intervention of the effective fervent prayer of the righteous availed much.

Authority through prayer

There are those, who out of ignorance and a few, who out of stupidity, mock and scoff at the power of prayer. The wise and people of faith know the authority we have through prayer. Many forget that nature is not God. Nature is subject to God's authority, portions of which He has given to those who know and trust Him. I ask the faithless and ignorant to humour me for a moment.

Think about this: as with Ivan, so it was with Dean. The hurricanes shifted course after intense and direct prayer. Let the nation know it is God's goodness extended to a nation with a divine destiny why there was so little comparative damage from Hurricane Dean.

Consider the facts. On the morning of Saturday, August 18, 2007, a number of us as Christian leaders gathered to seek the mind of God to guide us as to how we ought to pray about the situation. We went into prayer, appealing to God's mercy and exercising divine authority to redirect and break the devastating power of the hurricane on our nation and The Cayman Islands. Later that day, we called thousands of Christians to join in agreement with us in public prayer on national radio at 5:00 p.m., which was soon after carried by television stations.

There is no doubt to us that God has once again delivered us. We should therefore gather at places of worship this weekend to give thanks to God, taking our offerings of thanksgiving, praise and substance to Him, for delivering our nation from what could have been serious devastation.

Hurricane Dean is a call to national repentance and renewal, to humility, thanksgiving and commitment to faith in the Lordship of Christ. As citizens, let us consider, act, and take the time to build a monument of thanksgiving.

I am, etc.,
