THE EDITOR, Sir:TOO OFTEN we hear of shootings and other incidents where there are vast differences in what is reported. The police report one thing and the citizens swear something else happened.
In other cases, crimes occur, but eyewitness accounts are unreliablebecause persons have a poor recollection of the details.
All of this is happening while more and more Jamaicans acquire more advanced electronic devices. We are told that there are over 1.5 million cellphones in use in Jamaica today. Many cellphones today have a digital camera built in. Many phones have a voice recorder feature. Many persons also have digital cameras. My guess is that many of these incidents could be caught on camera if citizens made the effort.
We often record and publish images of gruesome accidents, hurricane damage and the 'dutty wine' dance. I would suggest that we make greater use of the available technology to help us solve some of the many crimes that occur frequently around us. While not everyone can have a gun, many can have this powerful tool of self-defence. Let's use the available technology.
I am, etc.,
