Election tie possible
published: Saturday | September 1, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Based upon the various polls that have been conducted surrounding the two major political parties and their respective chances in the upcoming general elections, there is a strong and growing possibility that there may be a tie. Has the government and the opposition party taken any serious steps toward dealing with such an outcome?

Though hypothetical at this point, the possibility that such an event could occur is strengthening. Based upon the latest poll findings, it would be in the best interest of both parties to swiftly arrive at a remedy for this matter before Election Day.

Allegiance

Another issue of great concern is the unsettled matter of the nominated candidates who currently hold an allegiance to a foreign country. If these candidates win their seats on Election Day, does this mean that their respective victories will be invalid? Will the remedy be that new candidates will be selected and a by-election held? Could it be that the majority of candidates who have been nominated but have not rescinded their foreign citizenships, feel that their chances of victory on election day are slim and therefore not worth sacrificing their foreign citizenships?

A constitutional conundrum, which could have been avoided, is looming.

I am, etc.,
