The following are seat counts in general elections held in Jamaica since Universal Adult suffrage in 1944.

There were 32 seats in the House of Representatives after the 1944 election, and the number increased to 45 in 1959. There was another increase in the 1967 election, bringing the number to 53. The number od constituencies were increased to 60 in 1976.


Election 2002: P.J. Patterson arrives at the PNP's headquarters on Old Hope Road after leading his party to an unprecedented fourth term in office.

1944 - Sir Alexander Bustamante's JLP won 17 seats to Norman Manley's PNP five. There were five independent candidates.

1949 - Bustamante's JLP won 22 seats to N.W. Manley's PNP 13. Two independent candidates were elected.


Election 1967 - Prime Minister Sir Donald Sangster (centre) and aides Neville Smith (left) and Capt. Osbert Chung arrive at King's House. Sir Donald was appointed Prime Minister due to the retirement of JLP leader, Sir Alexander Bustamante, whose party won the general election.

1955 - N. W. Manley's PNP won 18 seats to the Bustamante's JLP 14.

1959 - N.W. Manley's PNP won 29 seats to Bustamante's JLP 16.

1962 -Bustamante's JLP won 26 seats to N.W. Manley's PNP 19.

1967 - Bustamante's JLP won 33 seats to N.W. Manley PNP's 20.

1972 - Michael Manley's PNP won 37 seats to Hugh Shearer's JLP 16.

1976 - Michael Manley's PNP won 47 seats to Edward Seaga's JLP 13.

1980 -Seaga's JLP won 51 seats to Michael Manley's PNP nine.

1983 - Seaga's JLP formed the lower house of Parliament with 60 members. Michael Manley's PNP did not contest.

1989 -Michael Manley's PNP won 45 seats to Seaga's JLP 15.

1993 -P.J. Patterson's PNP won 52 seats to Seaga's JLP eight.


Election 1980 - Prime minister-elect Edward Seaga of the Jamaica Labour Party greets supporters.

1997 - P.J. Patterson's PNP won 50 seats to Seaga's JLP 10.

2002 - P.J. Patterson's PNP won 34 seats to Seaga's JLP 26.
