LETTER OF THE DAY - Shouldn't our educators be setting a good example?
published: Sunday | September 2, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

It was with disbelief that bordered on disgust that I watched snippets of the recently concluded Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA), conference. The behaviour of the now immediate past president, Mr. Hopeton Henry, was nothing short of disgraceful. He needs to understand that whereas he may privately advise his friends on how to exercise their franchise, the public platform of the JTA presidency is not to be painted in any political shade by cheap, transparent innuendo. His inflammatory comments about "using your head" have only served to politicise the JTA, and this was clearly unwise.

Youthful exuberance

Professional educators ought to inspire the highest and the best in others. Hence, utterances made by an educator of the 'celebrated' status of a Mr. Hopeton Henry, in any public forum, must be made responsibly. While one cannot accuse the goodly gentleman of youthful exuberance, his behaviour was nothing short of asinine. In future Mr. Henry, use your head, the physiological one that is.

I am, etc.,
