THE EDITOR, Sir:ASAFA POWELL'S performance at the World Champs, though not his finest, is preparing in our hearts a desire for something greater and better.
Many have lambasted him for not being a competitor, but I appeal to those to allow for time to shape the man. In Asafa, many have found someone with whom they can relate to in their life struggles. Sometimes what seems to be within our grasp oftentimes slips away so quickly. Yet, despite our disappointing moments, we continue to press on.
Currently, Asafa will need a Jamaica that acts as a parent. In essence, we love him, despite his performance. If we persist in deriding our athletes when they do a little poorly, we will find ourselves no different than the spectators who filled the Roman amphitheatres. In Jamaica we say 'no problem' because we know everything will be all right. Patience is a virtue and we need to exercise this when dealing with our athletes.
Asafa will get better and his fame will continue to grow but, through it all, let him remember that Jamaica and Jamaicans supported him through his journey.
I am, etc.,
