14 ways to spot a gold digger
published: Sunday | September 2, 2007

IN OUR romantic partnerships, we want individuals who will help us to grow emotionally, spiritually and financially.

The sad truth, however, is that some people are out to get as much as they can. They, therefore, operate in their relationships on a 'grab-and-flee' basis.

How can we spot the people who are out to exploit us materially in relationships?

Here are Outlook's top 14 signs that you are going to be fleeced:

1 She goes to the hairdresser every week, is frequently seen in new clothing and yet has no visible means of earning the money to buy same.

2 He carries the most expensive phone and loves fancy cars, but refuses to secure jobs which can provide his desires.

3 She asks you to 'make up' her rent every month and does not seem interested in finding lodgings which are within her earning bracket.

4 He gets lost in admiration when he sees sumptuous real estate, but refuses to even pay his National Housing Trust contributions.

5 She is happy receiving gifts from you, but never gives any or offers gifts which cost more than $400.

6 He takes the day off work to help you with your family business and then announces that he needs to be compensated for his time.

7 She tunes out when she hears that some member of your family is in need of help. She does not want you to spend money on them, but on her.

8 He is always broke when bills are to be paid.

9 She only gives gifts to rich, elderly relatives who might die soon and leave her their estate.

10 He never discloses information about his bonus payments, lies about what he truly earns and frequently goes shopping and comes back with nothing for you.

11 When you are both broke, she encourages you to 'use your credit card' or borrow from friends.

12 He is never available when you need a ride to go on the road and complains about the cost of gas when he takes you out.

13 She concocts excuses to avoid helping you out of difficulties or even do small favours for you that will cost her time and money.

14 He never repays the money he borrows from you.
