Wrong speech, Mama P!
published: Wednesday | September 5, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I was extremely appalled when just minutes after the preliminary count was announced, I saw Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller running out, 'full speed ahead', to give a speech.

Instead of accepting the defeat with dignity, she went out there and attacked the polls and vowed to "take action" over some of the seats her candidates lost.

She accused people of campaigning before elections and barring people from voting. Was she saying that if those people were allowed to vote, she would have won the election? Instead of commending the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) for their hard work, she found all sorts of faults with the election which would, of course, make it look unfair to her. The speech she gave seemingly encouraged people to think negatively about the elections, and more so, of her rivals.

Let's just say that the 31-29 result given on September 3, 2007 simply showed that the people of Jamaica 'changed course'. Mama P, on the other hand, should stay on her seat and accept her defeat.

I am, etc.,

Ms. JUVELLE TAYLOR
