More private sector groupings have added their voice to those congratulating the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) on its general election victory. They are the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), the Jamaica Bankers Association (JBA) and the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association (JMA).
"The win by the JLP brings to a close one political era and heralds a new beginning for Jamaica," the PSOJ said in a release yesterday. The organisation said it hoped that this new government would bring a fresh outlook and new vigour to addressing the critical issues which face the nation.
PSOJ President Christopher Zacca said: "This is a critical time in the history of our country and a time for all Jamaicans to work together to address the immense challenges facing our nation."
The organisation said it anticipated that the new government would immediately move to create the appropriate environment for business and the achievement of a lawful and just society.
"We encourage a renewed look at the Partnership for Progress social agreement, which is designed to seek consensus on issues of national importance and to implement tangible measures to move the economy forward," the PSOJ said.
It continued: "We expect the Government to operate at the highest standards of governance, with greater transparency, efficiency and accountability in the operations of the public sector."
The JBA, in its congratulatory message, said it recognised that the closeness of the results could pose some challenges, but also realised that these could provide the basis for greater collaboration and unity if the elected representatives were to put the people of Jamaica first.
The organisation also congratulated the People's National Party (PNP), led by Portia Simpson Miller, for its performance in the election and said it looked forward to a vibrant and constructive Opposition.
And the JMA has pledged its full support to the new government "as we work together to achieve sustainable growth".
It also commended all successful candidates.
"As our nation embarks on another juncture under new leadership, it is our hope that both parties will collaborate to facilitate continued development," the JMA said.
