Major probe into cop's murder
published: Saturday | September 8, 2007

An intensive probe headed by the Major Investigation Task Force (MIT) is now under way into the killing of Detective Sergeant Edgerton Brown, a former member of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller's security detail.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields said a meeting of senior detectives took place yesterday morning to ascertain the details of the case while plotting the way forward.

extensive forensic tests

While stating that the investigations were at an early stage, he said that extensive forensic tests have taken place on the detective sergeant's abandoned motor vehicle, while the police have garnered several leads.

"We will continue to work tirelessly to solve this crime and we are asking anyone with information to come forward or call Kingfish at 811 or Crime Stop at 311."

Detective Sergeant Brown, 30, was shot and killed on Thursday night along Sundown Crescent off Molynes Road, in St. Andrew.

Police reports are that about 8:30 p.m., Brown dropped off a female companion when he was approached by two men, one armed with a gun and the other with a knife. He was robbed of his service pistol, a Glock 17 semi-automatic and two mobile phones by the men who then shot him several times. The unknown assailants then proceeded to take his Nissan Sunny motor car.

The injured sergeant was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His car was later found abandoned in the nearby Olympic Way/Bay Farm Road area.
