The Editor, Sir:I am somewhat concerned and perplexed as it concerns the uproar that is being created now as a result of the fact that some JLP members who have been elected to Parliament hold dual citizenship.
The Jamaican passport clearly states: "Persons born in foreign countries of Jamaican parents or born in Jamaica of foreign parents, persons married to foreign nationals as well as persons who have acquired Jamaican citizenship by natural-isation or registration may possess a foreign nationality, in addition to Jamaica citizenship."
I am asking for clarification of this paragraph. My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that Jamaican citizens can be citizens of other countries as well.
In other words, dual nationality is acceptable in the eyes of the Jamaican government and constitution.
Another understanding that I have is that we choose people to represent us in Parliament that we believe have our best interests at heart.
What purpose would it serve to elect those who will bring us down orkeep us in a slump? Does it really matter if they have two passports?
I am, etc.,
