The Editor, Sir:Portia Simpson Miller squandered the huge political capital built up since her first Cabinet position under the Michael Manley-led PNP administration of 1989. The media and the Jamaican people embraced and showered her with 'love' and admiration over the past 18 years, equalled only by two formidable charismatic political leaders, Alexander Bustamante and her predecessor Michael Manley. However, this love affair is now under serious threat since her rise to the presidency of the PNP and Prime Minister of Jamaica.
It is quite obvious to many that Portia was promoted beyond her capabilities. She was perceived to be an effective Cabinet minister and obviously an effective politician, given her enormous popularity before her promotion. However, the complex role of Prime Minister exposed her incapacity to manage at the highest level. The role of Prime Minister requires enormous management and negotiating skills and an uncanny ability to manage complex matters.
Also, I have always doubted the 'charismatic' label placed on Mrs. Simpson Miller. The term was naively and simplistically used in reference to her public warmness and ability to 'whip up' a crowd with lively speeches. However, a charismatic leader must be able to galvanise critical support for his/her vision, motivate others around you to embrace your vision and the ability to identify the right people and resources to effectively execute that vision. Was she as Prime Minister able to demonstrate that quality since her ascendancy to the top post in her party and in the country? Was she able to hold the PNP, the Cabinet and the country together?
It seems clear to some that as Leader of the Opposition, Bruce Golding, demonstrated, unequivocally the very qualities and skills the Prime Minister clearly lacked.
I am, etc.,
