NOTE-WORTHY - The Portia future
published: Wednesday | September 12, 2007

The Portia future

What of your future, our beloved First Lady of Jamaican politics? Will you fly off into the sunset or will you retool and come again as your mentor Michael Manley did?

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but adversaries in your party are already sharpening their knives and are making ready their arrows! What to do? Gather your supporters together and fight to be the first Jamaican female Opposition Leader. This is a far cry from your loft but you will rise again and be better, stronger and greater than ever! You lost the popular voteby only 3,000; you were magnificent during the campaign.

Finally, like the phoenix you too will rise again; like your great predecessor P.J. Patterson, you too shall return. Until then walk good, keep your eyes wide open and don't change your course!

Bus stop delays

I would like the relevant authority to look into the managment of the JUTC bus system. I have noticed that the bus stops overflow with people during the morning hours 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and evenings 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. especially since the new school term began.

If timely schedules are established and monitored there should not be any problem, because at least every few miles away passengers would assume that a bus will arrive at a set time. This would help students arrive at school on time and employees are not late for work. I have also noticed that the seating and standing capacity on the buses are often breached especially by so-called robot vehicles.

The Transport Authority should ensure that the relevant inspectors do their job in dealing with these breaches.

Forum Hotel

What's up with the Forum Hotel and villas in Portmore, St. Catherine? It's just sitting there idle. What a waste.

Could it be used as a shelter, maybe a hospital? Doesn't the municipality need some offices? Could the Forum Hotel be renovated and used as such? Why can't we stop the waste and use what we have? This is a very valuable piece of infrastructure.

Illiteracy

Congratulations to Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica on his election victory. It is my hope that he will make good on his promise to provide free tuition for students at the secondary level, and I would also urge him to do everything possible to eliminate illiteracy on the island.
