Remembering Collie Smith
published: Wednesday | September 12, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Three cheers to Tony Becca for reminding us of the truly great cricketer Collie Smith might have been, but for that tragic accident.

Having had as his mentor, the beloved 'Father Philip Sherlock' of Boys' Town, Collie himself was a source of pride to us pupils of Boys' Town.

Having seen his many innings, in the Trench Town club, as well as at Sabina Park, against the greatest Australian fast bowlers, I also remember queuing for hours to pay one's last respects to him.

Neither should it be forgotten that it was in honour of Collie that the then West Indies captain, Sir Frank Worrell, went to play Senior Cup for Boys' Town, making the period the most successful it had ever had during the post-Sherlock era.

I feel proud that Collie is still remembered. Thank you, Tony.

I am, etc.,
