Remove shackles on diaspora
published: Tuesday | September 18, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to publicly commend Ken Jones for the balanced views that he has expressed in the article captioned 'Furore over dual citizenship - time to exorcise Section 40'.

Undoubtedly, Mr. Jones has done much work in meticulously researching this subject that is causing great concern not only in the island of Jamaica but to Jamaicans residing in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and elsewhere in the diaspora.

Like Jamaicans residing in the island of Jamaica, Jamaicans residing in the diaspora mentioned herein are depending on the outcome from sound judgment of erudite judges in the Supreme Court that will, once and for all, resolve this vexed issue and remove the shackles from Jamaicans everywhere that are seeking to offer themselves to serve in public office through which their knowledge and expertise can be given to the country they still regard as home.

As opined in Mr. Jones' article, it is unfortunate that the decision of the Jamaican electorate on September 3, 2007, has made key spokespersons in the PNP change their agenda from praising and encouraging Jamaicans residing in the diaspora mentioned herein for contributions that they have been making to their country to persecuting those that have offered themselves to serve their beloved homeland.

I am, etc.,

VIN SAMUELS
