The Editor, Sir:The elections are over, the people have spoken; only one party can win and only one party did. One must admit the elections were keenly contested with Bruce Golding and the Jamaica Labour Party emerging victors to a nail-biting photo finish. The finish was so close that the judges had to be called in; the judges ruled in favour of the JLP winning. Now that the elections are over, what do we do? Do we try to create chaos in the country looting, shooting and making the lives of our fellow brothers and sisters a living mess? Or do we accept the choice of the majority and move on with our lives in peace.
We have a democratic country which means, in this case, that the party with the most winning candidates forms the Government. It is a responsibility of the Government to serve not only JLP or PNP but every Jamaican, by seeking to provide a better way of life. When we fight and kill, it is only going to make things worse for not just the Prime Minister, but for the country, Jamaica. We are a country that relies a great deal on tourism, but if we are so passionate about our politics that we burn down people's houses, destroy their shops, shoot at their cars, then the tourism sector is going to suffer and our dying airline, Air Jamaica, will be dead. Now is the time when we should be uniting for our country against real problems: illiteracy, crime and violence, poverty, unemployment, etc.
Let us build a better Jamaica for the children, let us show them how to live good with each other no matter which side of the fence they are from. If you are PNP, JLP, NDM, rasta, whatever party you are affiliated with doesn't make you more or less of a person. We are all Jamaicans.
I am, etc.,
