NOTE-WORTHY: Lead with decorum
published: Wednesday | September 19, 2007

Lead with decorum

With regard to the recent statements made by the former Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, on how she intends to carry out her new responsibilities as Leader of the Opposition, it seems to me the former Prime Minister's behaviour is bent on continuing a downward spiral into 'butuism'.

I know politics is a male-dominated sphere in Jamaica, but does she feel that equality or strength is manifested with the kind of aggressive tirades she uses to express herself?

My advice, Mrs. Simpson Miller, is that in the pursuit of your duties as Leader of the Opposition, you conduct your 'opposing' with the decorum and grace suited to a lady of your office. Give our young women coming up an image to try and live up to. More importantly, let Jamaica and the observing world get a sense that you are interested in protecting the rights and welfare of Jamaicans and not just in being 'in power'.

Two negatives

The new government had a great first day in office except for two worrying events.

The first is the scrapping of the media briefing after Cabinet meetings. It was one of the pluses of the previous government. They opened up access for the media even to their detriment.

The second concern is the Minister of National Security Derrick Smith's sinister discussion with the Commissioner of Police. Could we be witnessing a whittling away of our democracy?

I supported the election of the Jamaica Labour Party to office because it was time for a change. But I certainly cannot support this dangerous insinuation which suggests that if Mr. Smith doesn't like our tone of voice, we could be in deep trouble.

Beware false prophets!

False prophets indeed!! We must beware ... there may be more.

Ninety per cent (give or take) of people claiming to understand the word of God are deficient in knowing it, let alone using it.

Welcome move

Congratulations to the Hon. Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica, and his Cabinet. We look forward to working with the new government and pray for God's blessing on them.

I also welcome the move for a special prosecutor to investigate corruption. The country is riddled with corruption over the past years. And I am happy that the Hon. Prime Minister is taking steps to stop it.

Good move, Mr. Prime Minister, I salute you as a server in the Church. I am happy for the deliverance from this sin that is killing Jamaica. I know that your new Cabinet will work with the people to make this country, a successful Jamaica, land we love.
