... Keith Mitchell calls for more aid
published: Wednesday | September 26, 2007

UNITED NATIONS (CMC):

Grenada has called on developed countries for increased aid in addressing climate change.

Speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell told a High-Level Summit of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday that less needs to be spent on studies and more on projects that allow small island states to better adapt and meet the challenge of climate change.

"There is a real danger that island states are becoming disabled through too many enabling activities," he said, noting that after the passage of Hurricane Lenny in 1999, sea surge damaged coastal roads of four Caribbean islands, including Grenada.

"At a cost of $5 million dollars, assistance was given to these islands in their desperate attempt to address the urgent need for sea defences.
