Education decline
published: Friday | September 28, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Our education system seems to be deteriorating daily teachers are trying their best.

I believe some of the factors contributing to the deterioration are media output, politicians, and the attitudes of parents and children. Some of the things the media broadcast are garbage and do not enhance creativity or self-esteem,

Politicians' behaviour in the nation's Parliament and during political campaigns are often unacceptable. Some parents are grossly irresponsible and neglect their parental role, while basic parental skills are lacking among our young parents.

Meanwhile, the children's level of interest is low. They focus mostly on the wrong role models, with the 'get-rich-quick mentality'. Their manner of discipline erodes the very fabric for their existence. Their priorities are wrong and makes the teacher's role much more difficult.

Wake up, Jamaicans, our children are suffering socially, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and physically.

I am, etc.,

SAM ROBERTS
