Parties aplenty
published: Friday | September 28, 2007

Chester Francis-Jackson, Gleaner Writer

( L - R ) Lee, Scott, Melville, Lewin, Edwards

And so, my dears, Virgo ended like how it began - with a slew of parties commemorating the fabulous people born under this sign. And now enter another fabulous age; this time Libra, and dovecakes, they are celebrating with all the gusto and fanfare befitting the season!

Luvs, to begin with, this is now the season for multi-tiered celebrations, and so it is all about fabness and my dears, y'all know we are talking about the start of a memorable season here, and nothing but!

Doves, it's all about the notables and celebrated who share this stellar constellation, and it began with that awesome fashion designer Bill Edwards, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday of this week, with a very intimate outing at the tres chic Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel. He and his belle, the fabulous Janet Farrow, had eyes for no one or nothing else as they basked in the radiance of each other over premium libations, in celebration of the occasion.

Razzmatazz to follow

Now, whereas that was a very intimate occasion, the jollification and razzmatazz will follow on the weekend, when the couple and a number of specially invited friends will gather in the cool climes of Stony Hill to share cake and make merry, and pumpkins, this one promises to be champagne gusher and nothing but!

And speaking of this weekend, my dears, it promises to be one of those - a social smasheroni, and then some, with quite a number of noteworthy celebrations on the calendar.

To begin with, we keep getting the birthdays of north coast socialites, art dealers and patrons, Peter and Annabella Proudlock all mixed up! The fact is, Peter Proudlock is a Virgo, who celebrates his birthday on September 3, and his darling wife Annabella Proudlock is a Libran, who celebrates her birthday today, and so we say a very happy birthday to this illustrious Libran! Now, tomorrow being Saturday the 29th, cultural icon and historian, the indomitable Dr. Olive Lewin, the reigning matriarch of all things cultural, especially all things essentially Jamaican folklore, will celebrate her 80th birthday with a rather special outing and shebang, being hosted by her daughter, the charming Maj. Johanna Lewin Belnavis, that will see a shortlist of specially invited friends and fellow dignitaries in attendance!

No fluff or profiling here as it is simply not that kind of an occasion. Instead, those expected can anticipate a rather socially and intellectually stimulating outing, and nothing but!

Now, if you are not yet in receipt of your invitation, it probably means that you did not make the cut and so will be missing out on one of the season's more glamorous events, as this here weekend, guests from all over the globe will join Caribbean national and businessman at large, Danny Melville, at his Chukka Cove getaway, where they will join him and his family in celebrating his 60th birthday!

My dears, it promises to be one fabulous cantata, spread over three days, with the first (Friday) being all about a fabulous reception, being hosted primarily for those guesting from abroad. Day number two (Saturday) will see the hosting of one fine celebratory bash, and then some. Sunday will be the wrap-up session, punctuated by brunch and libations that will see the curtains go down on the three days.

On Saturday, as well, Montego Bay-based antique dealer and co-owner of the celebrated Event Place, Joan Lee (the fabulous beauty and former model, April Parchment, is her business partner in this venture) will be celebrating another year of the charmed and beautiful life. And don't know if she knows it yet, but the plan is guests will gather at the Event Place, in the Second City, to make merry.

My daahlings, the divas of style, fashion and cosmopolitan chic will be in attendance, squired by their spouses and consorts, my dears, and with the mood definitely being festive, y'all know this is one of the weekend's prime dos!

Birthday celebration

Back in the nation's capital, impresario, contempo music doyen, artist, manager and one-time tourism poster child, Steve Wilson, will also be celebrating his birthday; the preferred location being the always buzzing Carlos Café, on Belmont Road in New Kingston.

And doves, this promises to be a reggae and dancehall star-studded event with a number of national and international recording and performing artists expected to 'pass through'.

Luvs, this one promises to be a celebration of pop-culture and music, with lots of haul-an-pull-up, and a fashion exposé, as dancehall will meet uptown, and luvs, y'all ain't seen nothing yet!

On October 3, businessman and political insider, Steve Ashley, will be celebrating his birthday. The party will follow later that weekend, however, in the form of a poolside brunch at his Norbrook residence, as this is where his fabulous wife, Betty, will be hosting the celebratory shindig! Now, champagne wishes y'all, and beluga treats!

Max Brown moves house

And speaking of Carlos Café, my dears, come the end of this month (a few days away really), clothier to the rich and famous, the high and mighty, and not to mention the politicos and the ruling social politburo, MaxBrown Unlimited, owned and operated by the uncommonly beautiful Sophia MaxBrown, will close its Mall Plaza outlet, this September 30, and reopen on November 15 beside Carlos Café, at 22 Belmont Road, New Kingston.

The relocation sale is a definite must, as it is truly a fab-happening, thing and then some! And then y'all know that the reopening cocktail reception and celebration is the hottest Yuletide do, and a not-to-be-missed event!

Divine experience

Then, if y'all have never tried or had the duck at the Royal Plantation Hotel and Spa in fabulous Ocho Rios, then you simply must, as it is truly a divine experience, as we mean a departure from the chewy experience that is oftentimes the reality when one encounters this feathered delicacy.

Oh, for my word, what an illustrious esoteric gourmet treat! My daahlings, to die for, especially with a bottle of, (think outside of the box) but do not limit yourself to only one, especially if the company is great, Pouilly Fuisse! And speaking of fabulous food and dining experiences, my dears, this year's Kingston Restaurant Week is all set to kick of with its press launch in one of Kingston's leading and arguably one of the finest restaurants, Mac's Chop House, next Thursday, at a breakfast launch that will see organiser and conceptualiser of the event, the charming Stephanie Scott, outline this year's programme and participants.

My dears, expect nothing but fabness this year, as it is promising to be like that, so wait for it!
