No Powell, Gay grand showdown this season
published: Friday | September 28, 2007

Powell

BEIJING (Reuters):

JAMAICAN world-record holder Asafa Powell will make his last track appearance of the season today at the Golden Grand Prix meeting in Shanghai, China.

A keenly anticipated showdown between newly crowned world 100m champion Tyson Gay and Powell will not materialise this year as the latter is scheduled to race in a weaker 200m field.

Since losing to the American in Osaka, Powell has been unstoppable, lowering his own world best to 9.74 in the 100m earlier this month.

American 400m king Jeremy Wariner and Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva look likely to dominate their events while Sanya Richards' absence from the women's 400m leaves the field wide open for Britain's world champion Christine Ohuruogu.

American Richards, who scooped a US$500,000 Golden League jackpot on the way to beating Ohuruogu in Berlin last week, takes on Jamaican world champion Veronica Campbell in the 100m.
