THE EDITOR, Sir:I understand that it was said by The Director of Elections and the Political Ombudsman that this election was free and fair, but in my opinion (and others) this is not totally true.
A case in point being the seat where Mr. Dalley lost. In the district of Desire to be exact over 50 persons who were verified and had come to vote, their names were left off the voters' list. The Electoral Office blundered big time, as we saw where persons who have always voted in a particular polling division, say Logie Green, after much running up and down, their names could be found in a P.D. in Spauldings, if they were ever found. I am saying this because it was my experience.
I have worked in this election. Intimidation was also evident, as there were persons saying that no more PNP would be allowed to vote at particular polling stations. Question: why is it that in a recount the People's National Party always lost seat/s to the Jamaica Labour Party and never vice versa.
Finally, the only way we can safely say that this election was free and fair, is, if everyone who was registered to vote and had gone to polling stations to exercise their democratic rights had an opportunity to do so. The electoral system needs to be revamped, and persons in the system who have ulterior motives need to take away themselves. This election was probably free I say, but it was never fair.
I am, etc.,
