Guyana could import new breed of sheep
published: Thursday | October 4, 2007

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Guyana is exploring the possibility of importing a new breed of sheep into the country as part of the drive to further develop the livestock industry.

Over the years, the country has placed emphasis on improving local animal breeds and various initiatives have been made to import animals such as Boer goat, Black Belly and Virginia White sheep, as well as Brangus and Zebo cows.

Now with the assistance of the British Government, Georgetown is exploring the possibility of importing Texel, a new breed of sheep that the British High Commissioner Fraser Wheeler said supports Guyana's agricultural diversification thrust through which other initiatives have been undertaken in areas of aquaculture and organic production.
