Prime Minister must probe past corruption
published: Thursday | October 4, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Allow me to congratulate my fellow Jamaicans on having elected a new government that was sorely needed to get the country back on track. The new prime minister or, as he has dubbed himself, chief servant, Bruce Golding, has so far been gracious and magnanimous even in his obvious goals for a united, peaceful and progressive Jamaica.

There has to be, however, a limit to all this extended grace and a serious effort has to be made to remove the disgrace of practices of recent and not-so-recent times.

An office of an independent prosecutor has to be established to investigate and prosecute, on behalf of the Jamaican people, any and all incidences of corruption, graft, theft or other misappropriation of public funds.

This prosecutor must operate outside the influence of party politics and he or she cannot be of weak character and given to the fear of threats as such should be expected.

Mr. Golding was loud and clear when he was in the Opposition pointing at the gross irregularity in the handling of several high-profile cases like Trafigura, etc., and his reluctance to have all such cases revisited and the letter of the law followed would smack of flip-flopping.

Bruce, please be reminded that 'all the people' did not vote you Prime Minister, but a justice-seeking majority did.

I am, etc.,
