Where should the new Parliament be sited?
published: Thursday | October 4, 2007

FIle
The House of Parliament, Gordon House, Duke Street, downtown Kingston.

  • Heroes Park, most appropriate

The Editor, Sir: I fully agree with Professor Brown's suggestion that the Parliament should be relocated at National Heroes Park. This is a most appropriate site for all the reasons he outlined.

However, I would like to suggest further that the current site should not simply be abandoned, but converted into an interactive museum of Jamaica's political history. The museum would be home to video footage of seminal events in our contemporary political life; various election campaigns; speeches; documentaries et cetera.

While I recognise that the Institute of Jamaica has an excellent document archives, I think this more visual and interactive approach would be an effective way of sharing our political journey with children and young adults. It would also preserve Gordon House as an important heritage location and add to the cultural vibrancy of downtown Kingston.

  • ... The Editor, Sir: I could not agree more with Professor Aggrey Brown. The new Parliament must reflect our nation's history and symbol of our past. The National Heroes' Park is the ideal location for our new Parliament.

The Editor, Sir: I like the idea of the new Parliament building being constructed at National Heroes Park.

  • Remain at site and renovate

The Editor, Sir: I believe the Parliament should remain exactly where it is at the present moment. What the government needs to do, is to renovate and extend into all the other conve-niences they will need.

I am sure this would be half the cost instead of a new building.

  • The Editor, Sir: I would have liked to know from an expert perspective the advantages and disadvantages of the existing site and the National Heroes Circle site.

All things being equal, I would rather an expansion of the existing site in the interest of cost effectiveness to the Jamaican taxpayers.

    I am, etc.,

  • Let history continue

The Editor, Sir: Heroes Circle is already playing its role adequately. Let history continue on its timeless invaluable course by allowing the new Parliament building to be built on its present site on Duke Street.

    I am, etc.,

    Desmond Barnett
