WESTERN BUREAU:

CORNWALL COLLEGE ended St. James High School's unbeaten run in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when a hat-trick by national Under-20 player Edward Campbell gave them a 3-1 victory at Jarrett Park.

By virtue of their win, the Dr. Dean Weatherley-coached Cornwall College now have the maximum 12 points from their four games, which has pulled them level atop the group standings with St. James High, who have played five games - winning four before yesterday's defeat.

"It was a very disciplined performance by the players who stuck to the game plan and did what was expected of them," said Weatherley. "Special mention must be made of Edward Campbell and Radcliff Hall who provided the inspiration for their teammates," he said.

Well-struck corner

After enjoying the better of the early action, Cornwall College took the lead in the 22nd minute when Campbell curled a well-struck corner out of the reach of the goalkeeper and into the goal.

St. James drew level 12 minutes later when the prolific Nicholi Barrett pounced on a rebound and slotted in his eighth goal of the season, making the score 1-1.

With time running out in the half, Cornwall College reclaimed the lead in the 45th minute.

Campbell capitalised on a defensive blunder and, with the goalkeeper at his mercy, he calmly slotted home, making the half-time score 2-1.

In the second half, which was marked by a series of fine saves by St. James goalkeeper Fitzroy McIntosh, Cornwall College got the lone goal of the half when Campbell completed his hat-trick in the 48th minute. After winning possession about 30 yards from goal, he fired home a powerful grounder, making the final score 3-1.

The competition continues this afternoon with four games - two in Zone A and the other two in Zone L (B). All games are slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
