Goals galore in Europe's best league
published: Thursday | October 4, 2007

Joel Crosskill, Contributor

THE DEBATE rages on as to which of the top-five European leagues is best and from the vantage of competitiveness, skill, flair and passion, at least four can stake their claim as the ultimate.

However, in this age of football as a commodity, for sheer entertainment value, none can rival the BPL. Just look at the week that was.

  • Portsmouth 7 Reading 4

Usually when you score four goals away from home, you get all three points, right? Apparently not if you're playing at Portsmouth because there Reading did just that - but conceded seven!

So, if you're keeping score, that's 11 goals in a match. A record for the premiership, the previous best being several nine-goal affairs, the most memorable of which was Man United versus Ipswich in '95 not a great advert for the defensive qualities of the league - who doesn't love to see goals?

  • Tottenham 4 Aston Villa 4

Not to be outdone in the drama stakes, a troubled Tottenham looked as though they were down and out for the count against the super-fast Aston Villa. Behind 4-1 with half an hour to go, the Spurs dug their heels in, rallied, and got an injury-time equaliser to rescue a point - and perhaps Martin Jol's stay as manager of the club. But how long Tottenham remain in the shallow end of the table seems largely dependent on the return to central defence of the King - Ledley King.

  • Chelsea Blue

John Terry gets his face caved in; last season's top scorer Didier Drogba sees red; Sheva's jeered by his own fans and roaming Roman sat with supporters in the stands. And, to cap it all, a goalless draw against the defensive sieve that is Fulham. The tragi-comedy that is Chelsea continues.

Meanwhile, Man United continue to hone the art of the ugly win. And what's with Liverpool, have they been screened for schizophrenia?

However, whether it's record-setting goalfests, subplots within the boardroom or simply the sublime play of Arsenal, Man City and, occasionally, Liverpool - for pure unscripted sports drama, the BPL is clearly worth the price of admission!
