Parents need to take charge
published: Friday | October 5, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The way that I see our children being spoiled and completely unaware of the people around them strikes me as not just unpleasant, but unhealthy for the child, and our society, to a greater degree.

I'm annoyed at the parents who continue to allow their child's wants to be as important as their needs and endorse the ridiculous philosophy of more money than sense.

Some parents don't really care, yet claim they do. And most times, it is their children that go on to have little or no respect for anyone.

Stop blaming others

These children don't care about being caught because they know the police and courts are virtually powerless, and these parents, who cannot believe their 'little angels' would ever do any wrong, are stuck in front of the television sets shaking their heads at the condition of the country.

Parents need to stop turning a blind eye and blaming others for their breakdown. Parents need to consider their responsibilities and who they are accountable to when making decisions.

Parenting is the answer

Just like many politicians, parents rummage around for that plausible excuse after they have messed up, and then search for a buffer of natural variation to save them from their own disregards.

Parenting is the problem and the solution to all or most of the maddeningly intractable problems of this Jamaican generation, whenever the question is asked, what is the setback with our Jamaican children?

The answer should be parents - and skip the part about more money, teachers, and disruptive children.

I am, etc.,
