Sacked teacher reinstated
published: Friday | October 5, 2007

A teacher at the Ocho Rios High School in St. Ann, who was dismissed from her job, has been reinstated following an out-of-court settlement.

Marjorie Richards had reportedly requested special leave to take her 88-year-old mother for treatment abroad after she was robbed and beaten last year.

Upon her return, she was given a letter by the chairman of the school board, Canon Glen Prince, indicating she had abandoned her job.

Ms. Richards said she had kept the school informed of her mother's situation. However, the school board dismissed her.

Ms. Richards took the matter to the Supreme Court to get reinstated.

An out-of-court settlement was later reached, following discussions between her attorney and lawyers from the Attorney-General's chambers.

Ms. Richards is also to be compensated for the time she was off the job.
