IRWIN HIGH, considered by many as the Cinderella side of Zone A, notched their first win of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when a 90th-minute strike by Eion Brown gave them a 1-0 win of Anchovy at Jarrett Park.
The win lifted Irwin to fourth in the six-team zone with four points. Anchovy, who have been going downhill since their impressive 3-0 victory over William Knibb in their first game, are now in fifth place with the three points.
In another Zone A game in Montego Bay, Herbert Morrison added another chapter to William Knibb's misery, handing them a 2-1 defeat. The win, Herbert Morrison's second of the season, placed them in third place on eight points.
In the game at Jarrett Park, it was a case of numerous missed chances by both teams as the waterlogged surface proved more than a tough challenge to the players. However, the Anchovy team had the better chances and must consider themselves unlucky to finish on the losing side.
Anchovy missed back-to-back 'sitters' midway through the first half through Roshane Reid. In the 28th minute, he broke free on the goalkeeper but unbelievably booted wide with the 'keeper at his mercy. Three minute later, he failed to capitalise on a fumble by the goalkeeper and scooped the ball straight to him.
With a draw seemingly the likely result with a minute to go in the game, Brown, in a moment of magic, converted it into a 1-0 win for Irwin. He won possession about 20 yards from goal, sped away from the Anchovy defenders and fired past the helpless goalkeeper to give his team victory.
