published: Tuesday | October 9, 2007

Western Bureau:

Garvey Maceo widened their lead over champions Glenmuir to four points yesterday afternoon when they registered a 4-1 win over Tacius Golding in their Zone I ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup fixture at the York Town Community Centre in Clarendon.

"The conditions were not conducive to good football, but we basically did what we had to do," said Jeffrey Hewitt, coach of the Garvey Maceo team. "The real important thing is that we left the away game with all three points."

Upstaged

The Garvey Maceo team, which got their goals from Andre Lindsay, Ashton Bennett, Michael Howell and Shawn Fogo, are now on 16 points, which they accumulated through five wins and one draw from their six games. Glenmuir were inactive yesterday.

In another high-profile game yesterday, Annotto Bay upstaged Brimmervale 2-0 in their top of the table clash, which lifted them to 20 points - two more than Brimmervale, which had a one-point lead going into the game.

The competition, now in the return phase of its preliminary round, will continue this afternoon with nine games across four zones.

In terms of fireworks, an epic battle is anticipated in the Zone A Montego Bay derby between St. James High and Herbert Morrison, as the teams set their sights on inter-zone places.

St. James High are joint leaders of the group with Cornwall College on 12 points each, while Herbert Morrison, which have an outstanding game, are next on seven.
