Big medal haul at Special Olympics
published: Thursday | October 11, 2007

JAMAICA'S SPECIAL Olympics medal tally soared to 32 on Tuesday, after another day of competition at the 12th Special Olympic World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.

Michael Simms, Terry Burges, Natasha Tucker and Tanisha Brown won two out of three games in the team section in bocce and are poised for a medal in the final round.

In basketball, Jamaica's male basketball team had a sad but spirited ending to their campaign, going down 28-23 to Germany in the bronze medal game to finish fourth. Omar Brown led the way for the Jamaicans with 18 points and 15 boards.

Gold medal contention

In men's volleyball, the team fell out of gold medal contention after going down 25-12, 25-14 to Iran in the semi-finals on Tuesday. The team will now play for positions three to five.

Jamaica's senior Special Olympic Reggae Boyz remain unbeaten in the football competition and a win for Jamaica in their next match against China's star-studded team will guarantee the team a gold medal. Jamaica last won a gold medal in football in North Carolina in 1999.

In what was a fierce badminton competition Dwayne Barrett and Fabian Rhule lost in the men's doubles final, going down 21-15, 21-10 to the South Korean duo of Kim Song and Kin Zengxue. Camaree Kenton lost her singles match to Shehlia Abdur of Pakistan, 21-11, 21-13.

Scott mines gold

Andromeda Scott, in a fast 21.04 seconds, rushed away with the gold in the 100m roller-skating event. Monique Brown was disqualified for taking more than three strides outside of her lane.

In the pool, the swimmers were not so lucky on the last day of competition as Leon Barclay, with a time of 4:37 minutes, finished fourth in the boys' 200m breaststroke. Another Jamaican, Gavin O'Gilvie, also placed fourth in 4:06.98 minutes in his event. The closing ceremony is set for today and the Jamaicans will depart for the island tomorrow.
