The Editor, Sir:Besides the obvious fact that rains across the island have made roads deplorable for driving, poor lighting makes it worse.
For example, I was heading into Kingston from Portmore and took the 'back road' that leads to the Mandela Highway. Upon reaching a section of the road I heard a loud bang on the left side of the car - I had hit a pothole.
I stopped on the road to change the tyre and a passing policeman stuck with me until I was finished, commenting that he had hit the pothole as well. Both of us concluded that because of the lack of lighting, the pothole was well disguised and was, therefore, more dangerous.
Funnily enough, before I got to Kingston I hit another pothole, again one I couldn't see.
While going through my second ordeal with the tyre, three different sets of policemen stopped to make sure I was all right, while at least five other motorists stopped and this was early in the morning.
However, good citizens, citizens who care, might not always be able to help. Let's get some lights on the road. We need to fix the potholes but motorists still need to have a fighting chance at escaping the expense and the inconvenience of damaged vehicles.
I am, etc.,
