Battle for inter-zone spots
published: Saturday | October 13, 2007

Adrian Frater, News Editor

Rohan Temple (right), Herbert Morrison's wily striker, seen here in action against St. James High, is expected to sparkle in today's game against Cornwall College.

Western Bureau: Should the rains stay away today, action will resume in the 2007 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup this afternoon with a full slate of matches across the island, inclusive of the start of the four-team Zone L play-offs. All games are slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

"We have been informed that the schedule has not changed so we are fully prepared and ready for our game," said Cornwall College's coach, Dr. Dean Weatherly, whose team will oppose Herbert Morrison in a Zone A 'super derby'.

With the competition's pre-liminary round now on in earnest and two teams - Munro College and Manchester High - already assured of their places in the inter-zone round, another seven could join them based on the outcome of today's contests.

In Zone D, victories for joint group leaders Cedric Titus and Ocho Rios, with 16 points each, will see them taking the group's two inter-zone slots.

Battle for place

Ocho Rios will battle fourth place Marcus Garvey (6), which they defeated 7-3 in the first round, while Cedric Titus will play away to third place Brown's Town, which they conquered 2-1 in their first round match-up.

In Zone F, second place Bellefield (13) will join Manchester High as the zone's inter-zone qualifier with either a win or a draw in their top of the table clash against the Manchester team on their home turf. In their first round meeting, Manchester had a 1-0 win.

Spalding, locked atop the Zone G standings with Holmwood, on 12 points each, is set to become the group's first inter-zone qualifier as they should repeat their first round win against Knox, whom they had clobbered 3-0. Holmwood will be on a break today.

Victory for Zone J leader Dinthill (19) and second place Glengoffe (16) would see them moving into the two inter-zone rounds, but defeat would open the door for fourth place Charlemont (5), which have two outstanding games. Dinthill will play Charlemont, while Glengoffe will oppose Bog Walk.

Should Zone K leader Annotto Bay (23) win their game against Tacky and third place Oracabessa (17) lose to fifth-placed St. Mary High (9), the Annotto Bay team would be assured of one of the group's two places.

In Zone L Port Antonio, which topped Group L (a), will oppose St. Thomas Technical, the Zone L (b) runner-up, while Zone L (b) winner Seaforth will oppose Fair Prospect, the Group L (a) runner-up.

While the game between champions Glenmuir (12) and Zone I leader Garvey Maceo (16) will not decide any of the group's inter-zone places, it should be a closely watch game as the champions will be gunning to avenge their first round 0-1 defeat.
