The Editor, Sir:
Please allow me to suggest a couple of solutions to help curb the runaway slaughter of innocent Jamaicans on the roadways at the hands of incompetent, uneducated and careless drivers.
I believe the time has come when drivers' education should be part of the high school curriculum for final-year students. I agree with the Prime Minister that one more year should be added before graduation. In that year, one of the classes should be drivers ed., and the students should be taught road signs, road safety and the importance of and proper maintenance of a vehicle, including tyres, brakes, lights and other safety features.
Less 'buying'
They should take their driver's licence test at the end of the course through the schools. This should help cut down the number of people 'buying' driver's licences.
The other suggestion is to increase random checks on the highway for not only safe tyres and brakes but also to test drivers' reading ability. If they are unable to read then their licences should be revoked and cut in two, right there on the spot, and they must tell where and how they got it, and the driver's licence examiner should be fined on the first and second offence and should be demoted or fired on the third.
I am, etc.,
