Canadian labour
published: Thursday | October 18, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The perceived shortage of labour in Canada is not because of a retiring work force. Those jobs do not pay enough to support the workers. It is expensive to live in British Columbia and is getting more expensive everyday as we approach the 2010 Olympic Games. The current government is continually patting itself on the back for creating an excess of employment here but most of the jobs are what we call McJobs that pay very little.

Any company that is importing unskilled labour from outside the country is merely looking to exploit its workers. Billing the clients $30 an hour and paying the employee the minimum wage $8 an hour is common. These employment 'opportunities' exist only because nobody here will work for so little money.

I am, etc.,
