NOTE-WORTHY: The Church, gambling and tourism
published: Tuesday | October 30, 2007

The Church, gambling and tourism

The Church is worried about their coffers and not any social aspects of casino gambling. The Native American casinos in the state of Connecticut have been a boon for the state.

The agreement between the state of Connecticut and the casino owners should be a model for countries like Jamaica. Connecticut gets 25 per cent of the cut of the gambling from the machines(over $200million per year).

Port Royal and another isolated site at the western end of the island should be utilised.

No Flow service

It is our understanding that Flow Communications (Columbus Communications) took over the cable service of Jamaica Amalgamated Cable Systems (JACS) from whom we had obtained cable services for a number of years. We have not had cable services since a few weeks prior to Hurricane Dean in August 2007.

Since Flow has taken over, our family has made numerous calls every week to this company begging for a service team to visit our location to determine what the problem is: e.g. whether the line cable had become disconnected from the outside connection on the light post.

Yet we have received a statement from Flow that we have been billed J$1,180.01 for October 1 to October 31. We are being billed for service not received from a company that we did not request to be our cable service providers and whose name (FLOW) is a contradiction.

Those new boards

It is with some degree of concern that I note the current buzz with the appointments of new boards, especially those that are considered "the cream".

Did the current administration forget about their promise of a Jamaica where everyone has a voice? Where are the appointments of ordinary Jamaicans who have given exemplary service to this country ... the medical practitioners, teachers, clergy and small business people who have been stalwarts at what they do?

Or are appointments a reward for the established private sector for their support and loyalty to the new government's cause? An old boys' club so to speak.

It should be interesting to have a news feature on what perks/ emoluments are afforded these new chairmen!
