The Editor, Sir:
Prime Minister Golding in an address on the weekend suggested giving additional responsibility to Justices of the Peace. We are already overtaxed with voluntary work, that is extremely costly.
Justices of the Peace are expected to do recommendations, passport declarations, verify photographs, driver's licence forms, copies of documents, bank account application forms, forms from the Registrar General's Department, forms from the revenue department, police documents, sit at Petty Session courts, Juvenile Court, as well as other court appearances.
My question to the Prime Minister is: Have you thought of making recommendations for Justices of the Peace to receive a stipend to defray the costs of stationery, transportation and other expenses incurred in doing these voluntary duties?
Until this matter is addressed, I think the many duties that Justices of the Peace are presently performing are already taxing and nothing more should be added.
I am, etc.,
