Fallon's trial marks day 13
published: Tuesday | October 30, 2007

Kieren Fallon - file

The race-fixing trial of English jockey, Keiren Fallon, and co-defendants, Fergal Lynch and Darren Williams, marked its 13th day at the Old Bailey in London on Friday and is proving quite interesting.

According to an article on the Racing Post website, the jury heard a series of covert recordings of telephone conversations between gambling owner Miles Rodgers and several individuals, including jockey Fergal Lynch, Shaun Lynch and Phillip Sherkie.

ONE-SIDED CONVERSATIONS

The conversations included references to Fergal Lynch, fellow jockey Darren Williams and the initials KF and all took place during August, 2004.

Only Rodgers' side of the conversion could be heard and many of the words spoken could not be heard sufficiently clear to be identified.

The prosecution emphasised that the words that appeared on the screens in the courtroom in conjunction with the recorded conversations themselves represented the prosecution's "best effort" at identifying what was said, but the prosecution's version was not accepted by the defence.

DAY 12: (October 25): The appearance of title-chasing jockey Seb Sanders as a witness for the prosecution and a cross-examination grilling of PC Paul Star were the highlights.

Sanders was questioned about the car journey he made from Leicester racecourse to a nearby airfield on May 18, 2004, accompanied by Kieren Fallon, Darryl Holland, Shaun Lynch and Miles Rodgers who was driving.

Sanders told the court: "None of us spoke. As far as I was concerned, it was just a lift to the airstrip."

Star, meanwhile, was quizzed over his recording of a conversation between Rodgers and Fergal Lynch at Malaga airport on August 3, 2004. Defence QC's cast doubts over what Star claimed to hear, and when he made his notes.

'NEVER APPROACHED'

DAY 11 (October 24): Three trainers took to the witness box including Kevin Ryan who trained a number of horses for the Platinum Racing syndicate run by Miles Rodgers.

Ryan told the jury he was "never approached" by Rodgers to stop one of his horses so he could benefit by laying it on a betting exchange.

Ryan had earlier described Fergal Lynch as "a very talented jockey", adding that he was a very stylish rider. Amanda Perrett and Paul Howling were the other trainers to appear.

DAY 8 (October 17): Jockeys Darryl Holland, Kieren Fallon and Seb Sanders got a lift in the Mercedes of Miles Rodgers, less than two months after the owner had been warned off by the Jockey Club.
