Two first-half goals from prolific striker and captain, Damian Harwood, gave St. Georges FC of Portland a 2-0 victory over Arnett Gardens in the Cash Plus Premier League game at Lynch Park, Buff Bay, on Sunday.
Winning coach Donovon Duckie praised his team's performance and noted that the nil-all draw with Portmore in their previous match had rebuilt the team's confidence. He said that Georges are physically and mentally prepared to battle with any team at this time, then disclosed their lofty ambitions.
"Our next game is against Reno FC and we are going for a victory," said Duckie. "We also have aspirations of being in the mid-season final, and that is our aim at this time."
St. Georges opened the scoring in the 25th minute after Dwane Holmes broke loose on the left flank and fired a 25-yard shot that rocketed off the upright back into play. The ball landed at the feet of Harwood, who controlled, then slotted home for the lead.
Arnett came into their own following a slow start, and came close to equalising after Horace Sharpe broke loose and found the unmarked Leon Strickland, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Georges custodian Anthoneil Williams.
Despite the gallant attempts of Arnett, St. Georges surged further ahead in the 43rd minute of the first half after Brissett, who was fouled but not stopped as referee Dave Peterkin played the advantage, fed a pass to Harwood who beat two defenders and scored to double their lead at 2-0 heading into the interval.
In the second half, both teams squandered easy chances after looking good while attacking, as they were hampered by poor finishing.
Arnett's coach, Max Straw, called the result a disappointing one for his team whose performance was way below par. He said mentally the team was prepared, but he is unable to say why the performance was not up to standard.
"I can only prepare my team for their next game and I am not going to make any predictions," added Straw. "I will say this, however, that every attempt is made to win all the games which Arnett play."
